Refrigerated

  1. Store in perforated plastic bag or crisper drawer
  2. Refrigerate
  3. Do not wash until ready to peel and eat
  4. Use while still firm and brightly colored
  5. Keep away from ethylene producers
Freezing freezing method 4-6 months

Frozen (Pulp)

  1. Peel and remove seeds if desired, pack pulp in freezer bag
  2. Freeze
  3. Use in drinks, syrups, or desserts

Revival Tips

Slightly soft prickly pears can still be used for juice or pulp; trim any spoiled spots.

Fun Facts

  • Prickly pear is the fruit of the opuntia cactus; the pads (nopales) are also edible and common in Mexican cooking.
