Each disk holds a breathable pouch of natural zeolite pellets coated with a potassium-permanganate solution, which the brand states absorbs up to 97 percent of the ethylene gas that fruits and vegetables emit. To use a disk, you peel off the gold freshness seal on the back to expose the breathable pouch, then place it in the crisper drawer or bowl where you store produce. As fruits and vegetables ripen they release ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone that accelerates ripening and spoilage, especially for ethylene-sensitive items stored nearby. The potassium-permanganate-coated zeolite inside the disk chemically oxidizes and traps that ethylene rather than just masking it, lowering the ambient ethylene concentration around your produce.

By continuously removing ethylene from the enclosed space, the disk slows the ripening cascade so fruits and vegetables stay firm and fresh longer. The same media also absorbs odor compounds, which helps keep the refrigerator smelling neutral. Because the potassium permanganate is gradually consumed as it reacts, each disk has a finite life of about three months and then needs to be replaced.
