Orchard Rack

The Orchard Rack from Gardener's Supply Company is a freestanding storage cabinet built from untreated, rough-cut fir. The large version holds nine removable slatted drawers that slide out for easy access, giving you a dedicated home for "keeper" crops like potatoes, onions, garlic, winter squash, and apples. Modeled on the rustic wooden racks once used in root cellars, it keeps harvests organized and ventilated in a cool, dark spot.

Each drawer is slatted on the bottom and sides so air can move freely around whatever you store, which is the key to preventing the moisture buildup, mold, and rot that shorten the life of stored root vegetables and fruit. Separating crops into individual drawers keeps ethylene-producing items like apples away from ethylene-sensitive vegetables, and it lets air circulate around every item rather than trapping it in a pile.

For best results the rack lives in a cool, dark, humid space such as a cellar, garage, or shed, where the constant airflow through the slats and the low temperatures work together to hold keeper crops for weeks or months.
